Yesterday, we found that Google quietly rolled out an extension of their Chrome Button few days ago. It is more powerful than it sounds, because you can now easily one page if you browse the Web, regardless of whether the owner of that content on a button on their site. Imagine if Facebook has such an extension of their button like .. In fact, you do not have to imagine.
Shortly after our post went, we were pointed to this extension in the web shop Chrome. Indeed, it is an extension of Facebook Like Button, according to Google as "author verified" the service is in fact built by Facebook itself. What is surprising is hardly anyone knows about this extension, it has only 500 users!
Maybe Facebook is not boasting at all times because it is a little weak. When you click on the thumbnails to the icon, you get a menu asking you to click a button like in a real overlay. So it's two clicks "as" something. But it can also come with nice comment that you share something (a button with the extension is not yet). And added options on Facebook Share on elements of your right-click menu. From there, you can be a page, to share a page, or recommend a page.
It is certainly possible that this was just a quick project that a developer hackathon threw together to Facebook. It can also be linked to their connection with RockMelt, the social browser that is built on top of chromium (a screenshot of the page reference extension him). Frankly, it is surprising that extension exists, given the lively relations between the two companies. It looks like it has been live since July.
After the story yesterday about extending a button, a number of readers seemed concerned about the ability of Google to track your movements online.Obviously, they will have the same concerns about Facebook with this key. Here's what Facebook has to say on the subject:
You do not need to be logged in to Facebook to install this plugin, but to love, share or recommend a page you will need to log on to Facebook a current account or create a new one. While the plugin is installed, it displays the total number of love for the page you are viewing. To provide a personalized experience, Facebook is going to see some technical information such as the URL of the page where you are, your IP address and the date and time of your visit to the site. All information collected before connecting on Facebook is anonymous or aggregated and will not identify you.
All information after logging ...
I also want to give a shout Hrishikesh Kale has created its own extension like Facebook after our story yesterday, also not realizing that Facebook already made.
